Working with the opportunity card in Germany
Holders of the Opportunity Card are permitted to enter Germany and engage in job search activities. This opportunity not only enables candidates to demonstrate their skills to potential employers but also provides them with valuable insights into the German work environment. If a candidate secures a permanent position during their time in Germany, they can transition to a different residence permit that aligns with their employment status.
Prerequisites for the Opportunity Card
To qualify for the Opportunity Card, applicants must meet several key prerequisites:
- 1. Education and Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of a vocational qualification or a university degree.
- 2. Language Proficiency: Basic knowledge of the German language (A1 level) is required, or alternatively, English language proficiency (B2 level).
- 3. Financial Stability: Applicants must provide proof of sufficient financial resources to support themselves during their job search in Germany, typically amounting to around €1,027 per month.
- 4. Point System: Candidates must achieve a minimum of six points based on a scoring system that evaluates factors such as qualifications, work experience, age, and personal ties to Germany.
These prerequisites ensure that applicants are well-equipped to integrate into the German labor market effectively.
Points distribution for the Opportunity Card at a glance
Four points are awarded for foreign professional qualification with partial recognition.
Three points are awarded for:
- B2 certificate in German
- Five years of professional experience in the last 7 years.
Two points are awarded for:
- B1 certificate in German
- Two years of professional experience in the last 5 years
- No older than 35 years.
One point is awarded for:
- A2 certificate in German
- C1 certificate in English
- Skilled worker in a shortage occupation
- Be between 35 and 40 years old.
